On Sep. 19, the Child Health Protection Act passed its final vote in the House of Commons. Soon, the bill will be referred back to the Senate for concurrence on the amendments I introduced to strengthen the legsialtion. With any luck, it will soon receive Royal Assent and become law.
Working on this legislation has been a long, yet rewarding process. This bill takes concrete steps to address childhood obesity, a significant public health issue of national concern, by eliminati…ng the marketing of unhealthy food and beverages to children.
When I was practising medicine, I would too often treat patients suffering from the numerous medical complications due to obesity. While I am no longer in the emergency room to treat patients suffering from these illnesses, I am in the House of Commons, as a representative of our community, to make a difference for all Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
