Bill S-228 passes final vote

On Sep. 19, the Child Health Protection Act passed its final vote in the House of Commons. Soon, the bill will be referred back to the Senate for concurrence on the amendments I introduced to strengthen the legsialtion. With any luck, it will soon receive Royal Assent and become law.

Working on this legislation has been a long, yet rewarding process. This bill takes concrete steps to address childhood obesity, a significant public health issue of national concern, by eliminating the marketing of unhealthy food and beverages to children.

When I was practising medicine, I would too often treat patients suffering from the numerous medical complications due to obesity. While I am no longer in the emergency room to treat patients suffering from these illnesses, I am in the House of Commons, as a representative of our community, to make a difference for all Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
