Valentines for Vets

The Valentines for Vets program engages youth, individuals and organizations across the country to express their gratitude for those who served, and to share messages of thanks with Veterans on Valentine’s Day.

Valentines for Vets began in 1989, when the late newspaper columnist Ann Landers encouraged her readers to create special valentines for Veterans throughout Canada and the United States. Since 1996, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) has received and distributed these cards to Veterans in Canadian long-term care (LTC) facilities.

Valentines for Vets encourages Canadians to create cards with messages of thanks for Veterans in LTC facilities across Canada. Every year, VAC receives thousands of handmade cards and distributes them for Valentine’s Day.

In 2018, VAC distributed approximately 19,000 valentines to more than 5,400 Veterans in 1,371 Canadian facilities.

Valentines for Vets provides an opportunity for Canadians to thank our Canadian Veterans for their service. The personal touch of handmade valentines brings smiles to their faces—some Veterans even display their cards for weeks after Valentine’s Day.

Canadians who want to send a valentine to a Veteran in a LTC facility can mail their cards by February 1 to:
